The Longines Global Champions Tour (LGCT) swept into the United Kingdom for the London leg of this global tournament; with all the panache, elegance and glamour that is associated with the world’s premier five star show jumping event.

The LGCT was the brainchild of Jan Tops, himself a gold medal winner in show jumping at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. He believed that the sport of show jumping required fresh impetus, with the focus and imperative being on securing higher levels of competitiveness and excellence.

With his prescience, the LGCT came into existence in 2006 as the vehicle to recalibrate the sport, by offering the world’s top 30 riders in the FEI rankings the opportunity to compete at the highest five star level of competition on a regular basis, and for the richest prizes. This well established tour now takes place over fourteen legs in nine different countries, and enjoys widespread and extensive mainstream media coverage.

Sports and Entertainment Limited UK (SEL) were assigned to be the commercial partner of LGCT for the London leg, with exclusive responsibility for its delivery. SEL faced the onerous challenge of securing a landmark London venue for the event that mirrored the prestige demands of the LGCT, and one that was readily accessible for contractors and spectators alike.

Applying their skill , expertise and local knowledge with the many stakeholders involved in this complex process, they were able to secure Horse Guards Parade as the venue for LGCT. Horse Guards Parade is a large historic parade ground off Whitehall, which is dominated by the Palladian splendour of Horse Guards itself, as well as being flanked by many other historic buildings of note.

Horse Guards Parade itself highly revered in the public consciousness with its association with the colour and pageantry of the annual Trooping the Colour ceremony. There could be no more suitable setting for the London leg of the LGCT.

The stage was set for what proved to be three days of outstanding, exhilarating and highly competitive show jumping from the top eighteen riders in the world; which delighted a well informed and enthusiastic audience in attendance, not to mention the world wide audience on account of the extensive live media coverage.

The World No 1, and LGCT 2013 champion, Scott Brash was clearly the man to beat and he did not disappoint. Spurred on by rapturous home support, the Scotsman displayed all the verve, skill and determination associated with him to see off his nearest challengers and win LGCT London.

Gallowglass Security was honoured to have been invited by SEL to provide the security regime for LGCT London. This entailed the setup and derig, as well as providing event security for the three show days themselves, which all passed off successfully.

The one unique feature of the security role, was the locations proximity to Downing Street and other Government buildings, and so with this heightened security risk, came the need for measures to ensure that safety was never compromised.

Managing Partner Giles Turnbull says “I never tire of the news that yet another assignment has been successfully completed ,with the unique Gallowglass Security ethos to the fore at all times. I would wish to thank my colleagues Jaco Nieuwoudt for his outstanding contribution to the planning of the security regime, as well as exemplary leadership on the ground; and to Nick Kostov  for his superb leadership and initiative in the field.

It has been a great pleasure working with Nick Mattingley, renewing a long standing working relationship forged on such events as  The British Military Tournament, Kenwood, Audley End and  Tatton Park Summer Concerts and the Natural History Museum Ice Ring among others. And for the first time ,being introduced to and working for, Prue Thompson, Peter Phillips ( always an added pleasure to work with a former Scottish Rugby International!), as well as their team from SEL, consummate event professionals all ,who put together a simply first class and outstanding event”
