For the second year running, Gallowglass has been invited by the TUC to provide event security for the TUC Disabled Workers' Conference. This will take place at TUC’s Congress House on the 28th and 29th May 2014.

The TUC is at the vanguard of those who promote a greater understanding of, and to highlight, the myriad of issues and discrimination that disabled persons can face; as well as championing disabled persons rights and interests. If last year’s agenda is a yardstick for this year, the agenda will be comprehensive and will seek to address many issues.

We anticipate that an uppermost concern will be how the Equality Act 2010, and the UK’s ratification of the UN Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities, can best be utilised to challenge discrimination and harassment in the work place, and to promote equality.

At a time when the welfare state is undergoing its most radical changes since the Beveridge Report, we think it likely that Congress will concern itself with how this impacts on some of the most vulnerable and marginalised in society, and will seek to respond and challenge these changes with real vigour.

We hope that Congress will continue to highlight the plight of the victims of hate crimes, for no other reason than their impairment; and to continue generating an awareness that the more extreme cases all start with the low level abuse and contempt, that too many disabled people face every day.

To have been invited back again to provide event security at this very important conference, we believe, is a real vindication of the planning and quality of our service delivery in 2013, and we are thoroughly looking forward to our return in May.
